What Happens During a Dental Crown Procedure?

The Tooth Is Checked and Prepared

Before anything begins your dentist looks closely at the tooth and the gum around it. An X-ray might be done if they need to see the tooth’s roots or the bone below.

If the tooth is good for a crown the dentist numbs the area. Once you feel no pain they remove any decayed parts. Then they shape the remaining tooth so the crown can fit tightly and securely.

Getting the Shape Right

This step is more important than most people think. The dentist isn’t just making the tooth smaller. They are shaping it carefully so the crown has support and keeps the healthy tooth structure as much as possible.

The Temporary Crown

Once the tooth is shaped your dentist takes a mold or a digital scan of your mouth. That way the dental lab knows how to make your new crown.

• A temporary crown goes on to protect the tooth. It won’t feel as natural as the crown.

• Try not to pull at it with your tongue or bite foods on that side. It needs to stay in place.

The Permanent Crown Is Fitted

During your visit the temporary crown comes off. The dentist checks the crown against your tooth and your bite before cementing it into place.

Sometimes it fits perfectly the time. Times, a small adjustment is needed around the edges or the biting surface. That’s normal. Honestly I’d a dentist take extra time to check the bite than rush this step.

What Does It Feel Like Afterwards?

Your tooth may feel a bit strange at first. That’s normal. The crown can feel noticeable because your mouth has a surface but most people stop thinking about it once they get used to it.

Some sensitivity around the tooth can happen after the procedure with cold drinks. Your dentist will tell you what to watch for and when to return if anything doesn’t feel right.
