What to Expect After a Dental Crown

The Few Days Can Feel Odd

Some tenderness around the tooth is normal after treatment especially if the tooth needed quite a bit of work before the crown was fitted. You may also notice sensitivity when drinking something biting into food.

Because the tooth has been worked on the surrounding area can feel slightly irritated. This usually settles as things calm down.. If the discomfort is getting stronger rather than easing don’t simply wait it out.

Your Bite Might Need an Adjustment

This is one part I’d take seriously. If the crowned tooth feels like it touches first whenever you close your mouth tell your dentist. A crown that feels too high can make chewing uncomfortable. Leave the tooth feeling sore.

The adjustment itself is usually quick. Your dentist checks how your teeth meet and makes a change to the crown if needed. Then you bite again. Much better.

Eating After a Crown

• A little sensitivity at first is common with cold drinks and it should gradually settle.

• If chewing feels uneven mention it than trying to train your jaw to accept it.

• Sticky foods can be annoying around a crown particularly during the first few days.

Keep Looking After the Tooth

A crown protects the tooth underneath. It doesn’t make the area immune to dental problems. You still need to brush around the crown and clean between your teeth. The gum around it matters too.

Don’t assume a crowned tooth can’t decay. The crown itself won’t develop a cavity. The natural tooth underneath and around its edge still needs care.
