When a tooth is broken — from trauma, decay or a failing old filling — a crown is often the most appropriate long-term restoration. By covering the entire tooth, a crown holds the remaining structure together, protects it from further fracture, restores the appearance and brings the tooth back to full function.
A crown is usually recommended when the break is too large for a filling to reliably repair, when the tooth is cracked and needs the fragments held together, when significant decay has left insufficient tooth structure for a filling, and when a root-treated tooth needs protecting from fracture — root-treated teeth are brittle and prone to cracking without a crown.
Breaks at or below the gumline are more complex. In some cases, crown lengthening surgery can expose more tooth structure to allow a crown to be placed. In other cases, particularly where the root is also fractured, extraction may be the only option. Your dentist will assess this at examination.
