Dental lasers are used to remove infected gum tissue from periodontal pockets, decontaminate root surfaces to complement root planing, treat recurrent infections around implants (peri-implantitis), and reshape the gum line in cosmetic gum contouring procedures.
Laser treatment is more precise — it targets only the infected or overgrown tissue without disturbing healthy structures. Patients typically experience less discomfort during treatment, less post-operative swelling and bleeding, and faster healing. Sutures are not always required. The laser also has a bactericidal effect, reducing the bacterial load in the treated area.
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic. The laser fibre is precisely positioned within the gum pocket or at the treatment site, and energy is delivered to remove infected tissue and decontaminate the area. Most laser appointments take 60–90 minutes and patients can return to normal activities the same day.
