About this treatment

Tooth Extraction near Richmond

We always aim to save a tooth wherever possible — but when extraction is the right decision, we make sure the process is as comfortable, quick and stress-free as possible. All extractions at Bridge Dental are carried out under local anaesthetic so you feel no pain during the procedure.

When is an extraction necessary?

A tooth may need to be removed when decay has destroyed too much of the tooth to restore it, when infection has spread beyond what root canal treatment can resolve, when a tooth is severely cracked below the gumline, when advanced gum disease has left a tooth too loose to save, or when a wisdom tooth is impacted, infected or causing recurring problems.

Simple vs surgical extractions

Most extractions are straightforward — the tooth is loosened and removed in one piece under local anaesthetic. Surgical extractions are needed when a tooth is broken below the gumline, has curved or fused roots, or is an impacted wisdom tooth. Surgical extractions are carried out by our dentist with specialist interest in oral surgery and take slightly longer.

After your extraction

You will receive full written aftercare instructions. Key points include keeping the area clean without disturbing the blood clot, avoiding smoking for at least 48 hours, eating soft foods on the other side and contacting us promptly if you experience prolonged bleeding, severe pain or swelling after 48 hours. We can discuss tooth replacement options at a follow-up appointment.

Common questions

Questions about Tooth Extraction

No — the area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before any extraction begins. You may feel pressure and movement but no pain. If you feel discomfort at any point, let your dentist know immediately.
A simple extraction typically takes 20–30 minutes including the anaesthetic. Surgical extractions may take 45–60 minutes.
Soft foods for the first 24–48 hours — soups, yoghurt, mashed potato. Avoid hot drinks, alcohol and smoking. Gradually reintroduce normal foods as the socket heals.
Simple extractions start from £195 with our general dentist. Complex or surgical extractions start from £350 with our dentist with special interest in oral surgery.
