Porcelain Dental Crowns Post-Treatment Checklist
The Few Days After Your Crown
Your tooth might feel a little strange at first. That doesn’t always mean something is wrong. The crown can feel different from your tooth because the shape and how it touches the teeth around it have changed.
Be careful with that tooth while everything gets used to it. If the area is numb after the treatment wait until the feeling comes back before eating. Otherwise it’s easy to bite your cheek or tongue without realizing it.
Your Quick Daily Check
• Check your bite. Your teeth should come together without the crown feeling much higher than the others. If you keep biting that tooth let your dentist know instead of hoping you will just get used to it.
• A little sensitivity is common at first with cold things. It should go away than get worse.
• Around the gum watch for swelling or pain that doesn’t get better. A crown shouldn’t make you constantly aware of the gum next to it.
• Keep brushing as usual. Be gentle near the gumline because scrubbing harder doesn’t make the crown cleaner.
Eating And Cleaning After Treatment
For the day or so softer foods are usually easier while your mouth gets used to it. You don’t have to live on soup though. As the tooth feels normal again you can go back to your meals.
Flossing still matters. Move the floss carefully between the crown and the tooth next to it clean around the gumline. Keeping this area clean helps stop plaque from building up around the crown.
When Something Feels Wrong
Some feelings need a look. Pain that keeps happening when you bite isn’t something you should just accept as part of having a crown. The same goes for a crown that feels loose or moves when you touch it with your tongue.
Your Follow-Up Check
If your dentist has set up a follow-up appointment go to it even if everything feels okay. A quick check can make sure the crown is in the place and that the gum around it looks healthy.
