Permanent Dental Crowns Explained for Beginners

What Does a Permanent Crown Actually Do?

A permanent crown goes over the part of your tooth that shows above the gum line. It is held in place using cement. Your dentist will reshape the tooth a little so the crown fits snugly. It might sound like a deal but its usually not painful.

Once its in place the crown helps take the pressure when you bite and chew. It also covers up any damage, which’s helpful when a tooth has become weak or broken.

The material used for the crown makes a difference. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are common because they look very natural. This is especially important for teeth that you see when you smile. Other crowns use materials like metal or zirconia which are better for back teeth that handle more chewing force.

Does It Look Like a Tooth?

Yes that’s the point. A made crown should match the shape and colour of your other teeth. You shouldn’t feel like you have something in your mouth.

At first you might notice it. Your tongue will probably keep checking the tooth, which is normal. After a days it should feel like a natural part of your mouth.

What Happens During the Treatment?

Getting a crown usually takes two or more visits. At the appointment your dentist checks the tooth and prepares it by removing a small amount of tooth structure. Then an impression or digital scan is made to create the crown.

While the permanent crown is being made you’ll wear an one. Be careful with it. Sticky foods like chewy candies can pull it loose. That’s not a way to start.

Looking After Your Permanent Crown

– Brush your teeth normally. Don’t scrub the gum line like you’re trying to remove paint. Gently clean the area around the crown.

– Flossing is important. Food can get stuck beside the crown after meals. Flossing helps keep things fresh.

– Be a little careful with hard or sticky foods. If you’ve had restorations before you might already know that these can cause problems.

– If the crown feels loose cracked or starts to hurt don’t wait. Get it checked away. A small issue can become a problem if you ignore it.

Are Permanent Crowns Really Permanent?

The word “permanent” might sound like it lasts forever.. It really means the crown is meant to stay in place unlike a temporary one. It’s not something you can take out.

So a crown can last years, but it’s not forever. With care it might last 10 to 15 years or more.. If the crown feels wrong after the first few days don’t ignore it. A small bite problem can become very annoying when you do it thousands of times a day.
