Temporary Dental Crowns Post-Treatment Checklist
Right After Your Appointment
Wait until the numbness has worn off before eating. This is probably the thing to forget especially when you’re already thinking about lunch. Biting your cheek or tongue because you can’t feel it properly is a little problem you don’t need.
Once sensation returns start with something to chew. Don’t immediately test the crown with something just because it feels secure.
Your first check
• Numbness first. Food can wait until you can properly feel your mouth again.
• If your bite feels uneven or one tooth hits before the others mention it than hoping you’ll simply get used to it.
• Sticky sweets are an idea here especially if you tend to chew them slowly.
Eating and Cleaning the Crown
Temporary crowns aren’t designed to take the abuse as permanent ones. Be sensible with them. Hard foods can put pressure on the crown while sticky foods may pull at the material or loosen the temporary cement.
Floss too. Slide the floss down gently then pull it out from the side than snapping it upward which can catch the edge of the temporary crown.
A small routine that works
Keep the area clean without becoming obsessed with it. Brush with a soft toothbrush and take a little extra care around the gumline. That’s enough for people.
Watch for Changes
Pay attention if the crown feels loose. So should you if it cracks, moves or comes off completely. Don’t try to glue it yourself. Dental cement belongs in the practice not the bathroom cabinet.
Call your dentist if you develop pain that doesn’t settle, swelling or a bite that still feels wrong after the initial adjustment period.
Before the Permanent Crown
Keep your follow-up appointment. The temporary crown is doing a holding job while your final crown is prepared so leaving it in place longer than planned isn’t something to casually ignore.
If the temporary crown comes off before that appointment contact the practice. They’ll tell you what to do based on the tooth and how soon you can be seen.
